Debbi Smith was schooled in the world of politics during college working in the 1979 gubernatorial campaign. She worked for the St. Tammany Parish Council for one year until she began working for the House of Representatives as a legislative aide to Representative Edward Deano in 1983. Smith continued to work on successful campaigns for J. Bennett Johnston, Edwin Edwards and John Breaux among others.
After graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelor's degree in marketing, Smith created sales literature for 6,500 Prudential Bache account executives and investment communications for 100,000-plus investors in Graham Resources' financial products. Seeking broadcast experience, she worked for BBP Marketing Group in New Orleans. All the while she continued to work on political campaigns.
After promoting the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras in 1992, Smith came back to the rapidly developing Northshore to build her own agency. Thus began Marketing and Management Solutions, LLC. The company's first political victory was the hard-fought Covington mayor's race of Keith Villere. With growing name recognition, candidate Jack Strain hired Smith in his run for Sheriff of St. Tammany Parish in 1995. In this open seat, Strain was one in a field of 10 candidates coming out of the primary facing the well-known and well-financed Slidell Chief of Police Ben Morris. With Election Day falling on the first day of deer hunting season, Smith orchestrated an early voting strategy that spurred record-breaking early voting and guided Strain to victory.
Many more successful campaigns ensued, with races for mayor, state senate and representative, judge, municipal and parish council and parish president as well as initiatives. She has racked up an impressive win record of 90 percent, winning most campaigns in the primary. Recreation District #4 hired Smith, after having lost a previous attempt for a property tax millage, winning the second election with a whopping 73 percent of the vote. In 2007, Smith helped Jack Donahue, a political unknown, defeat a 16-year state representative in his bid for state senate. She then guided three simultaneous district judge campaigns to primary wins in 2008.
Meanwhile, she mastered more and more of the political domain graduating from the Media Buying Academy and completing the Campaign Management Institute, a nationally recognized master's level program of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University in Washington, DC. Most recently, Smith received the Spirit of St. Tammany Award from the St. Tammany Tourist and Convention Commission. The award is to be henceforth named in her honor.
